KDF Recruitment 2021: Kenya Defense Force Recruitment has started now, to join, candidates can apply for the posts of General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets, Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen / Women, and Defense Forces Constables.

The application process is on till 8th February 2021 so all interested applicants are advised to apply on or before the closing date.


KDF Recruitment General Conditions

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens.

The applicant must have a valid Kenyan National Identity Card (ID), and four copies of the national identity card and PIN certificate will be required to apply.

Applicants should be physically and medically fit as per KDF standards.

If you have a criminal record then you cannot join KDF.

If you are pregnant you are not eligible for KDF recruitment, so female candidates should not become pregnant at the time of recruitment and during the entire duration of training.

Specialist officers and tradesmen/women must have at least two (2) years of practice experience in their field of competency from the date of qualification or registration with the relevant regulatory/regulatory body in Kenya.

Age limit – GSO cadets, less than 18 years for general duties and not more than 26 years

Not more than 30 years of age for women with recruitment and trader/certificate/government trade examination, specialist officer, tradesman/diploma, and not more than 39 years for chaplains.

Minimum height:

  • Male 1.60 m (5 ft 3 in).
  • Female 1.52 m (5 ft)

Minimum weight:

  • Male 54.55 kg (120 lb).
  • Female 50.00 kg (110 lb).

The body mass index must be between 18 and 30.

Minimum Academic Qualifications for KDF Recruitment 2021

According to the KDF recruitment advertisement, the applicant must have the following academic qualifications:

General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets

Must hold a minimum mean grade of B (Plain) in KCSE with C+ (Plus) in English, Mathematics and one Science subject. The training period for this category will be three (3) years leading to a BSc degree in Military Science and Security Studies upon completion.

General Service Officer (GSO) Cadet

Undergraduate Degree Holders. Must hold the minimum requirement to qualify as GSO Cadet in Para 3.b.(1) above and be a holder of an undergraduate degree from a recognized University/institution in any of the disciplines listed at Para 4.b. The training period for this category will be eleven (11) months.

Specialist Officers

Must hold the minimum requirement to qualify as GSO Cadet in Para 3.b.(1) above except for Chaplains who must hold a minimum mean grade of C+ (Plus) in KCSE. Must be a holder of an undergraduate degree from a recognized University and where specified Masters degree from a recognized University. Where applicable, be registered with a regulatory/statutory body in any of the disciplines listed at Para 4.c. The training period for Specialist Officers will be six (6) months.

Servicemen/women (General Duty) Recruits

Must hold a minimum mean grade of D (plain) in KCSE. 


Prospective candidates willing to apply must satisfy the conditions and requirements given below:

  • Technicians. A minimum means a grade of C (Plain) in KCSE, a relevant Diploma or above from a recognized institution, and be registered with the relevant statutory bodies, where applicable.
  • Artisans. A minimum means a grade of D+ (Plus) in KCSE and either a relevant certificate with Government Trade Test Grade II or Craft II from a recognized institution.
  • National Youth Service (NYS) trained Technicians or Artisans who meet the above requirements are encouraged to apply.


  • Be a retired Kenya Defence Forces Service Member or a retired National Youth Serviceman/woman.
  • Be between the ages of 30 and 55 years old for retired KDF and between 35 and 45 years old for retired NYS.
  • Possess a Discharge Certificate with a minimum rating of “Very Good” in conduct.
  • Must have served for nine (9) years Colour Service and retired honorably from KDF.

Detailed CVs to be sent which include the height and weight of the applicant are required to have a clear photocopy of relevant academic certificates, professional body membership certificate, and current national identity card (ID), and should be attached to the application.

Between 18 and 25 February 2021, Kenya Defense Forces Specialist Officers and Trademan / Women Selected Candidates will be notified through print media.
